DoggyRide Cocoon

We bought the DoggyRide Cocoon so I could take our dog on my bicycle, but also to attach it to my husband's wheelchair. We plan to attach it to his wheelchair when he uses his ZX-1 Power Add-on for the times we need to keep her enclosed, like at shops and restaurants.

First review

After a lot of research into different higher end bike dog carriers (Rixen & Kaul, Petego, etc.) I ordered the DoggyRide Cocoon. When I first installed it I was not happy about the KlickFix adapter and it seemed difficult to get on and off the bike. I spent a lot of time researching other carriers and even tried to make one myself before deciding if I wanted to send it back or not. I decided to take it to a bike shop and have them install it, and they also showed me how putting it at about a 45 degree angle made it easy to get on/off. Now I am so happy that I did not send it back.

I need to take my somewhat hyper Jack Russell with me a lot because if I don’t she cries a lot and causes the neighbours to complain -- she is a real momma’s dog. She also causes my handicapped husband a lot of stress if left with him, which is the primary reason I bring here almost everywhere with me. I wanted something I could take her on my bike, on the train, on flights to be able to carry her in shops and to be able to set her down when I don't want to be watching her all the time like in a restaurant.

I think it is going to work really well. I like that it is very solid and that the mesh dome is very strong. Most others that I looked at I knew she would just chew right through. When I’m not on my bike I like that I can unclip her and the dome still contains her very well. She also has enough room to stand and to see out and seemed very content just staying in it at a restaurant.

I had a hard time knowing if the size would fit her, so I have included a photo with a tennis ball for comparison. There is more than enough room for her to stand and sleep comfortably, which is important to bring her on the train or long international flights. I think there will also be enough room for a cushion. The bottom is quite hard, which is good for giving her security on the bike, but it will be a bit hard for long trips.

The only things I wish it had was a washable cushion and comfortable backpack straps so I could carry her on my back when I was shopping or carrying luggage. I’m also not sure if the raincover is going to be more work than I want to deal with, because I live in a rainy place and would need to take it on/off a lot. Maybe a snap-on or Velcro rain cover would be a bit easier.

As you can see from the photo’s, she was not totally thrilled about it, but then again it was raining and her first time out in it. Now that I have put a ball in it she likes it a lot and even sleeps in it in the house. It passed the big test of lots of kids with balloons at a festival today and she was not able to jump out and pop them all!

Follow-up reviews

Coming soon! I will be writing a review of the DoggyRide Cocoon mounted on a Burley Travoy bike cargo trailer and also hopefully on  my husband’s wheelchair.

I manged to find a somewhat workable solution for attaching the DoggyRide Cocoon to the bike trailer.

Product information

The DoggyRide Cocoon allows you to take your dog with you on cycling tours. This luxurious bicycle basket is easy to attach with the KlickFix adapter, so your dog has a beautiful view of the road. With the safety belt and teh dome on the Cocoon, you dog will be safe in teh bicycle basket, while enjoying the fresh air and the view.

For rainy days the Cocoon is equipped with a rain cover. This rain cover protects your dog against cold and wet weather. If you want to detach the Cocoon from your bicycle, you can easily take the shoulder strap out of one of the pockets and attach it to the basket. The Cocoon has a hard exterior and the nylon interior of the Cocoon is waterproof and easy to clean with a damp cloth.

The Cocoon can also be used as a car seat (booster). This way, your dog can enjoy a safe journey. The car booster seat is not included. It is possible to order it separate.
