The One-Eyed Visionnaire

Rob had a real break-through with painting. We knew that Rob’s visual field of both eyes was affected by quadrantanopia, which affects a quarter of the field of vision. He has been using compensatory movements to make up for it, but it makes it difficult to paint.

We think that the painting has really been helping, especially on his unaffected side, and it appears that he may have regained most of the visual field and awakened that side. He is going to start painting with an eye patch on his affected side, so he can see better, and enjoy painting more.

Not bad for a guy with hemispatial neglect and homonymous quadrantanopsia, a decreased vision or blindness in one quarter of the visual field.

Paris as seen with left homonymous inferior quadrantanopsia.

So he does not overcompensate on that side too much, he will also switch the eye patch to his unaffected side, so he can balance the effects of “non-use”, but probably we will not do that with painting until he is ready. He is very excited about this, and is looking forward to being “Pirate Painter Rob”.
